Dryden, VA

Dryden is an unincorporated Lee County community along the Powell River in Southwest Virginia, concentrated just off U.S. Route 58 Alternate between Pennington Gap and Big Stone Gap. The post office opened in 1879, and the name came from Captain Dryden, a railroad official. The 2020 census counted 986 residents. The river forms the southern edge of the community, while Jefferson National Forest rises to the north, putting roads, water, and wooded slopes close together.

Dryden’s location places it inside Lee County’s Appalachian corridor. Route 58 Alternate carries the community toward Pennington Gap and Big Stone Gap, while the Powell River follows the valley floor and gives the settlement its strongest natural boundary. The area’s older railroad connection survives in the name and in the route’s role as a link between valley communities. Dryden is a place built around a post office, a river, and a mountain road, with the forest and county towns shaping the space beyond its scattered center.
