Drytown, CA

Drytown holds the title of Amador County’s oldest community, founded right along Dry Creek during the initial gold rush of 1848. The creek often dried up during hot summers, giving the settlement its name, while thousands of miners poured into the area to try their luck. After gold production tapered off and an 1857 fire cleared out much of the boomtown camp, Drytown settled into the quiet, steady rhythm that still defines the area today.

Life in Drytown centers on a relaxed foothill setting with Gold Rush history visible right along Highway 49. The main strip features preserved 19th-century architecture, antique shops, and a few favorite local stops. With Plymouth’s wine country just up the road and everyday shopping nearby in Sutter Creek and Jackson, it offers an easygoing, scenic spot to put down roots.
