Drytown, CA

Drytown is Amador County’s oldest community and the first place in the county where gold was discovered. Mining began along Dry Creek in 1848, and the camp grew into a Gold Rush town with stores, cabins, a post office, a stamp mill, a school, and a surprising number of saloons. The name came from the creek, which could run dry in summer; the town itself once held thousands during its mining peak. A fire in 1857 and declining gold production changed that trajectory, leaving a much smaller settlement along State Highway 49.

Today, Drytown’s historic core includes a town hall and other surviving structures recognized as a California Historical Landmark. The short stretch of Highway 49 has a general store, diner, motor lodge, antiques, and the old creek-side building pattern that makes the past visible from the road. Drytown is small in population, but its footprint carries the whole Gold Country sequence: creek mining, boomtown commerce, fire, and a modern community that keeps its oldest streets in view.
