Dublin, IN

Dublin is a Wayne County town in eastern Indiana, laid out and platted in 1830. Harmon Davis purchased the land for $500 and prepared the town site; within its first year, a dozen families were living there. By 1832, Dublin had cabinetmakers, a blacksmith, a tavern, a tannery, a carding mill, a physician, and an undertaker. Those early trades show a settlement serving travelers and nearby farms before modern roads and services. The businesses clustered around the town’s early road network and made Dublin a service point for the surrounding farms.

Local history records several stories behind the name. Dublin may have been linked to the founder’s Maryland hometown, to a tavern nickname, or to the rough work of doubling horses on muddy roads; the connection to Dublin, Ireland is one theory, not a settled fact. Today, the town has the Dublin Public School Library and municipal offices on Cumberland Street, while the old grid remains a compact stop between Richmond and the surrounding Wayne County countryside.
