Duck Hill, MS

Duck Hill is a Montgomery County town of 619 people at the 2020 census, down from 732 in 2010, on U.S. 51 midway between Grenada and Winona. Big Bogue Creek flows east and north of town, and the route leads 12 miles south to Winona and 11 miles northwest to Grenada. The town's name comes from a large hill where Duck, a Choctaw chief, held war councils; a statue of Chief Duck once stood beside an old Illinois Central caboose on U.S. 51.

Duck Hill also has a strong gospel-music connection. Lucie E. Campbell was born here on April 30, 1885, in a train caboose while her mother was bringing dinner to her railroad-worker father; Campbell later became a singer, composer, teacher, and advocate. The Lucie E. Campbell Gospel and Heritage Festival takes place each summer. The town's local map joins a highway, creek, railroad remnant, Choctaw history, and a musical legacy that still returns to Duck Hill every year.
