Duncan grew at the historic crossroads of the Chisholm Trail and the early railroad, expanding from a frontier trading post into the Stephens County seat and the birthplace of Halliburton. Erle P. Halliburton started his oil-field cementing business here in 1919 with a borrowed wagon and a team of mules.
