Dundalk, MD

Old Dundalk began as a planned community for steel-mill and shipbuilding workers during World War I, and its roughly century-old street plan remains visible around the historic town center. The larger Dundalk census-designated place spreads across Baltimore County’s low Atlantic Coastal Plain southeast of Baltimore, between the Patapsco River and Back River; 67,796 residents were counted in 2020. Industry had arrived earlier along the waterfront, where Irish immigrant Henry McShane established his bell foundry in 1856. The Dundalk Historic District entered the National Register of Historic Places in 1983, and the town center became a designated Maryland Main Street in 2004. Heritage Park puts that center to active use. The Dundalk Heritage Fair has occupied the park since 1976, and the 2026 edition brought live music, games, family activities, and local vendors before the community’s July Fourth parade and fireworks.

Education is another visible part of community activity. CCBC Dundalk is a 70-acre main campus of the Community College of Baltimore County, with classroom and training programs, gardens used as living classrooms, athletics, a theater, courts, fields, and a pool; in summer 2026, the college offered designated free community swim hours. At the Sollers Point branch of Baltimore County Public Library, programs and events share space with public computers, Wi-Fi, gaming, a caregiver workstation, and eight electric-vehicle chargers. County parks add waterfront access and recreation elsewhere in Dundalk, including walking paths, playgrounds, fishing piers, boat ramps, fields, and community centers.
