Dunkerton, IA

Dunkerton is a Black Hawk County city in the Waterloo-Cedar Falls area, with 842 residents in the 2020 census. Its name came from James Dunkerton, who offered the railroad a right-of-way across his farm on the condition that a depot be built and carry his name; grading was finished in 1886. That railroad beginning still has a physical address in town. The Dunkerton History Museum occupies the lower level of the public library at 203 E. Tower Street, and local preservation work is bringing a one-room school and the Lincoln Depot into the museum story.

The everyday map spreads beyond the museum. Veterans Memorial Park on Main Street carries engraved bricks honoring local service members, while Charma Park and the Charma Trail connect to Mixdorf Nature Preserve. Eagle Scout Park, Gazebo Park, Carroll Hauptly Memorial Park, and the Sportsman's Club add more places to stop, play, or get outside. Dunkerton Days brings a parade, car show, mud volleyball, fishing derby, bike races, and fireworks to Main Street in summer. It is a small northeast Iowa city where a railroad promise, a library basement, and a handful of well-used parks keep the local story in motion.
