Dunkirk, IN

Dunkirk straddles Blackford and Jay counties, a small city whose identity was shaped by glassmaking and the railroad. The old railroad depot, established in 1867, gave the town a connection to regional markets; glass factories followed, and at its peak Dunkirk had 23 plants, some small enough to fit in a house. That is why the city earned the Glass Capital of Indiana nickname. The post office's 1941 Frances Foy mural, Preparations for Autumn Festival, Dunkirk, preserves another bit of local memory, tying a national-era art project to a very specific Indiana town.

Today the glass story is easiest to pick up at the Glass Museum, while the former depot and downtown Depot Park point back to the transportation era. Depot Park hosts summer concerts and weekend farmers markets, and city parkland extends the gathering space beyond Main Street. Dunkirk Public Library, Westlawn Elementary, and West Jay Middle School keep the daily map local, with the Community Pool and West Jay Community Center adding seasonal and civic stops. The giveaway is the combination: glass history in the museum, a depot downtown, and parks that still give the small city places to meet.
