Dunnavant, AL

Dunnavant is a Shelby County CDP in the southern Appalachian foothills, strung along Alabama 25 and Shelby County Road 41 in northern Alabama. Leeds is about six miles north, while Vandiver is roughly four miles southeast, but the local roads do not read like a straight suburban grid; they follow the valley and the ridges around it. The name is tied to a local family, and the post office ran from 1897 until 1958.

The newer map includes the Dunnavant Valley Greenway, a county-planning project that adds a recreational thread to a place long organized by roads, farms, and hillside homes. Alabama 25 is the main through route, while Dunnavant Valley Road points toward the smaller communities and back roads of Shelby County. That mix gives Dunnavant its character: close enough to Leeds and the county’s larger road network to share a regional orbit, but still shaped by the Appalachian landform. Think of it as a valley community with a family name, an old postal history, and a road network that bends with the ground.
