Dunnigan, CA

Dunnigan is a Yolo County CDP on Interstate 5, but the road is only the newest line in a much older landscape. The area is historically Patwin territory, and the town first took shape as Antelope. In 1853, winter flooding along the Sacramento River pushed people living closer to the river toward higher ground, where new claims formed around Dunnigan. That movement gives the community a grounded local story: water set the terms, and the settlement moved to meet them. That history still matters.

Today Dunnigan sits about 11 miles from Arbuckle and roughly 40 miles from Vacaville and Sacramento, with the Pierce Joint Unified School District serving local families. The hot-summer Mediterranean climate is part of the practical rhythm too, shaping the fields and travel between the valley communities. Dunnigan is easy to pass on I-5, but its character sits behind the highway—Patwin country, Sacramento River flood history, a higher-ground settlement, and a school district that keeps the place tied together.
