Dupont, PA

Dupont is a Luzerne County borough in the Greater Pittston area, midway between Wilkes-Barre and Scranton. The borough's 2020 population was 2,539. It grew out of a small settlement first called Smithville and took the name Dupont after the explosives company that supplied mining work in the region. That industrial name remains a clue to the landscape: coal-country roads, rail lines, and later highway interchanges all pass through this part of the Wyoming Valley. Today Dupont is primarily a residential borough, but its local map is busier than the population number suggests.

I-81 has two nearby interchanges, the turnpike and Route 11 are close, and State Route 315 runs north and south. Pittston Area schools, the borough building on Chestnut Street, youth baseball, the Lions Club, VFW, and monthly council meetings give the place its ordinary civic texture. Dupont's local scoop is a northeastern Pennsylvania borough where an old mining-era name sits beside modern roads, warehouses, and the everyday routines of Greater Pittston.
