Durham, NC

Durham’s character comes straight from its hardworking history. After the Civil War, the city quickly grew into a tobacco powerhouse, anchored by the massive American Tobacco Company that defined the skyline for decades. Just a few blocks away, Parrish Street emerged as a thriving center for Black-owned businesses, earning national renown as Black Wall Street. Groundbreaking institutions like North Carolina Mutual Life and Mechanics and Farmers Bank built a lasting financial foundation here despite segregation. While the cigarette factories eventually shut down, that dual legacy of grit and trailblazing entrepreneurship still fuels the city's modern identity.

As manufacturing faded, education and medicine stepped in to shape the city's next chapter. On the west side, Duke University and its world-renowned health system expanded into an economic engine with a gorgeous Gothic campus and top-tier research facilities. To the south, North Carolina Central University stands as the country’s first state-supported liberal arts college for Black students, maintaining deep cultural roots in the community. Even as urban renewal and highway construction reshaped historic areas like the Hayti district, Durham continues working to honor its past through community preservation, cultural arts centers, and local storytelling.

Today, the local job market thrives on cutting-edge research, biotech, and higher education. Duke Health and the nearby VA hospital employ thousands of medical professionals, while North Carolina Central brings energy and cultural programming to the south side. Just southeast of town sits Research Triangle Park, one of the country's most prominent technology and science hubs. Historically made up of quiet corporate campuses, RTP is adding walkable residential neighborhoods, outdoor gathering spots, and local dining at Hub RTP, making the commute easier for newcomers working in science and tech.

Downtown Durham is where the city’s past and present come together best. The old brick warehouses at the American Tobacco Campus have found new life as apartments, tech offices, cozy coffee shops, and local restaurants alongside the DPAC performing arts center and the Durham Bulls ballpark. Getting around is easy, with fare-free GoDurham buses connecting the downtown transit hub to Duke, NCCU, and surrounding neighborhoods. Between weekend farmers markets, food truck rodeos, and packed summer ballgames, Durham offers a friendly, grounded community that feels easy to call home.
