Durhamville, NY

Durhamville is a hamlet in the Town of Verona, Oneida County, where the 2020 census counted 527 residents. It is one of Verona's six named hamlets, and its name came from Eber Durham, an early settler. Durhamville grew where the Erie Canal carried goods through central New York; Verona's history also records glass factories that operated there for more than forty years. The hamlet's location makes sense once you see the old transportation map: water, roads, and industry all gathered along the same narrow corridor.

The canal is still the local giveaway. The Oneida Creek Aqueduct, built around 1856 as part of the Enlarged Erie Canal, sits just west of the hamlet, and the old water route continues beneath modern roads. Durhamville also had barge construction and an Erie Canal lock that was abandoned when the route changed. Railroads later pulled traffic away, and the Barge Canal and New York State Thruway followed different versions of the same east-west corridor. Today Verona's public services, schools, and fire departments provide the framework, but Durhamville's character is still tied to the old canal edge and the industries that grew beside it.
