About Dysart

Dysart is a Tama County city that arrived with the railroad in 1872. John Crisman laid out the town, while Joseph Dysart—an Iowa lieutenant governor—gave it the name; the first train crossed the new line on December 27 that year. Dysart incorporated in 1881, and its extra-wide Main Street was planned to run toward the park. The town also has an unusual Orphan Train chapter, when children from crowded eastern cities were sent west for adoption. Dysart is a railroad-platted Iowa town with a broad main street and a name shared by places in several countries.
