Eads, CO

Eads is the county seat and largest municipality in Kiowa County, set on Colorado's southeastern plains at about 4,219 feet. The railroad established the town in 1887, and its name honors James Buchanan Eads, the engineer behind the Eads Bridge over the Mississippi at St. Louis. The post office opened on November 18 of that year, giving the new settlement a fixed place on the map as farms, ranches, and county business gathered around the tracks. Kiowa County later made Eads its seat, and the town incorporated in 1916.

Today Eads remains a county-services town, with government, education, and local businesses concentrated around its main streets. Kiowa County School District RE-1 operates Eads Elementary, Eads Middle, and Eads High School, keeping the school campus closely tied to community life. Historic buildings along Maine Street, including the old school gym and former commercial blocks, preserve the look of a railroad-era county center. The 2020 census counted 672 residents, and the surrounding agricultural country still gives Eads its working rhythm.
