Eareckson Station, AK

Eareckson Station is the census-designated place associated with Eareckson Air Station on Shemya Island, in the Near Islands of Alaska's Aleutian chain. The island sits about 1,500 miles southwest of Anchorage, at the western tip of the archipelago, so the airfield and radar installation define the map. Contractor housing, support buildings, communications equipment, and a long runway occupy a narrow strategic strip of land surrounded by the North Pacific.

The island was developed by the U.S. Army in 1943 during World War II, when engineers built a 10,000-foot runway and hangars to support operations against Japanese-held Attu and Kiska. It later served as a refueling and staging point on the Great Circle Route during the Korean conflict. The station took the Eareckson name in 1993 for Col. William Eareckson and now operates as an early-warning radar site maintained by an onsite contractor. Its work includes radar maintenance, civil engineering, vehicles, communications, and emergency-divert support. The local scoop is that Eareckson Station is an operating outpost on a remote Aleutian island: the CDP, airfield, radar, and contractor workforce all occupy one strategic strip of Shemya.
