Eareckson Station, AK

Eareckson Station sits on Shemya Island near the far western edge of Alaska's Aleutian chain, roughly 1,500 miles southwest of Anchorage. The entire island functions as a remote defense outpost surrounded by the stormy North Pacific. Life here revolves completely around the air station, where a massive runway, tracking radars, contractor quarters, and support facilities make up the entire community.

The post dates back to World War II, when military engineers carved out a base to support Aleutian combat missions. Today, a rotating crew of civilian contractors keeps the early-warning radar systems and airfield operational year-round. Daily life involves dealing with fierce crosswinds, heavy fog, and extreme isolation, with staff managing runway repairs, logistics, power generation, and emergency aircraft diversions along trans-Pacific flight corridors. It is a small, tightly knit working community built entirely around its mission.
