Earlville, IA

Earlville got its start when the railroad reached Delaware County in 1857. George M. Earl, the first settler remembered in the town’s name, gave the new community its identity, and a post office opened the next year. The railway did more than bring trains: it fixed the town’s location, connected farms to markets, and created a place where stores, churches, and public buildings could gather around the tracks. Earlville remains a small city just off U.S. 20, in the rolling farm country between Manchester and Dyersville.

One of the best local details comes from the early church story. When railroad operations began, a boxcar on the switch was used for Methodist services, a temporary meeting place that shows how quickly civic and religious life had to improvise around the new line. Maquoketa Valley Community School District now serves local area public schools, and the town’s daily connections run through Delaware County’s farm roads and nearby communities. Earlville has the shape of a rail-founded Iowa town: tracks at the center, George Earl in the name, school and church life filling the present, and a county landscape extending in every direction.
