East Foothills meets San José at the entrance to Alum Rock Canyon, making regional open space the area's clearest public amenity. The 720-acre Alum Rock Park provides hiking, cycling, horseback riding, picnic grounds, lawns, and a playground along Penitencia Creek. As of July 2026, storm damage from 2023 still required temporary traffic controls, one trail segment detoured around a damaged trestle, and the Mineral Springs Trail remained closed for erosion. Dogs are prohibited because the park is managed as a wildlife sanctuary, and fire-season restrictions can limit barbecues or close the grounds. East Foothills held 6,803 residents in 2020, down from 8,269 in 2010, across just over two square miles. Estimates for 2020 through 2024 recorded 86 percent owner occupancy, a median owner-occupied value of $1,346,100, mortgage-holder costs above $4,000 a month, and median gross rent of $3,321.

Median household income was $199,375, households averaged more than three people, and workers averaged 32 minutes of travel to work. The same profile found 34 percent of residents foreign-born and 48 percent of people age five or older speaking a language other than English at home. Above Alum Rock, the 1,611-acre Sierra Vista Open Space Preserve extends the trail network into oak woodland, grassland, and chaparral. Its nine miles of multiuse routes include nearly seven miles of the Bay Area Ridge Trail, and the Todd Quick Trail connects the preserve with Alum Rock Park. In July 2026, the preserve's small parking lot remained the only place to leave a car, and visitors had to travel counterclockwise around Aquila Trail.
