East Hazel Crest, IL

East Hazel Crest is a compact south-suburban village in Cook County, about 22 miles from downtown Chicago. The 2020 census counted 1,297 residents. It began as part of Hazel Crest, then incorporated in 1918 after elevated Illinois Central tracks physically separated the rural community from its western neighbor. The rail corridor still divides the village’s map: the Calumet Metra station connects riders to Millennium Station, while the Canadian National Markham Yard and related industrial land occupy the southern and western edges.

Most of East Hazel Crest is residential, with small commercial strips along 171st Street, Ashland Avenue, Governors Highway, and Dixie Highway. I-80, I-294, Halsted Street, and the Metra line give the village a regional reach, while village departments handle police, fire, water, public works, and administration close to home. The commercial map includes the Wind Creek casino complex near the interchange, while major shopping and many larger errands spill into Homewood, Hazel Crest, Harvey, and South Holland. East Hazel Crest is a rail-and-interstate suburb whose neighborhood streets sit directly beside a working freight corridor.
