East Millinocket, ME

East Millinocket grew around the Great Northern Paper Company mill built beside the forests and waterways of northern Maine. The company began construction there in 1906, and the town’s early population included workers and families drawn from many countries. Paper, timber, the railroad, and the Penobscot watershed formed the economic base, giving East Millinocket the character of a company town with schools, churches, and a shared neighborhood life.

East Millinocket Schools operate Opal Myrick Elementary and Schenck High School on one campus, and the Katahdin Higher Education Center extends the town’s education network. The paper mill’s decline changed work and population, but the town remains tied to the North Woods, Millinocket, Medway, and the larger Katahdin region. Residents use local schools, library, town services, recreation, and local outdoor routes, with forests, lakes, and Mount Katahdin shaping weekends and seasonal work. East Millinocket carries the marks of paper-making history while building daily life around the woods that made the mill possible.
