About East Millstone

East Millstone is a Somerset County census-designated place in Franklin Township, with 588 residents in the 2020 census. The village grew around the Delaware and Raritan Canal and the old Millstone and New Brunswick Railroad, so the waterway and the former rail terminus still shape its layout. Amwell Road and Canal Road meet the historic center, with farm fields, river lowlands, and old houses spreading around it. The canal, river, and rail corridor leave the village with a very legible local map for newcomers, too. Today the D&R Canal towpath and Millstone Valley Scenic Byway carry most visitors through, while East Millstone Historic District keeps the village’s architecture and canal-era buildings in view. The old Franklin Inn, also known as the Van Liew Farmhouse, was a canal tavern and hotel that served traffic along the waterway.
