East Pittsburgh, PA

East Pittsburgh is a borough in Allegheny County, about eleven miles southeast of Pittsburgh’s confluence of the Monongahela and Allegheny rivers. The borough occupies a small piece of Turtle Creek Valley, but its industrial history reaches far beyond its boundaries. George Westinghouse built large works here, supplying equipment for the Niagara Falls power plants and New York’s elevated and rapid-transit systems. The Westinghouse works later became a research center, and the George Westinghouse Bridge remains a landmark over Turtle Creek. KDKA’s first radio transmission from the Westinghouse plant in 1920 gave East Pittsburgh a place in broadcast history too.

Today the borough is a compact residential community near Braddock and the eastern edge of Pittsburgh. The creek, bridge, and former industrial ground still give the surrounding valley its shape, while local government and neighborhood streets fit into the larger Allegheny County network. East Pittsburgh’s story is a useful reminder of how a small municipality can sit inside a much bigger technical and manufacturing history. The same valley that once carried Westinghouse equipment and early radio experiments now carries daily traffic, school runs, and short trips toward Pittsburgh.
