A connected forest network gives East Renton Highlands its strongest shared landscape. McGarvey Park Open Space contains 11 miles of multiuse trails in a 400-acre working forest. Its west trail reaches the 90 wooded acres and playground at Petrovitsky Park, while its east trail continues through Wetland 14 Natural Area into Spring Lake and Lake Desire Park. There, hikers and mountain bikers can use another three miles of trail, including a route up Echo Mountain for views of the lakes and Cascade foothills; Spring Lake also has a launch for nonmotorized boats. King County manages this recreation system in an area that remains outside municipal boundaries and within Renton's potential annexation area. East Renton Highlands had 11,937 residents in the 2020 census. Its 2020-2024 housing profile was overwhelmingly owner-occupied: homeowners occupied 91 percent of homes, and 91 percent of residents age one or older had stayed in the same home from the previous year.

Metro Route 148 also stops near the county park network, giving park users a scheduled transit option.
