East Rockingham, NC

East Rockingham is a Richmond County census-designated place on the eastern side of Rockingham, close to the roads that carry traffic through the Sandhills. The 2020 census counted 3,471 residents. U.S. 1 reaches the community from the south and meets the I-74/U.S. 74 corridor nearby, while the tracks that once served Richmond County's rail network run toward the county airport. East Rockingham sits in the working edge of the Rockingham-Hamlet area, where roads and rail matter as much as town lines.

The name suggests a suburb, but the local map has more layers. Rockingham is the county seat, Hamlet has the region's strongest railroad history, and East Rockingham occupies the space between those two pulls.
