East St. Louis is a historic city in St. Clair County, Illinois, situated directly across the Mississippi River from downtown St. Louis, Missouri. Originally established in the late eighteenth century around a ferry service operated by James Piggott, the community of approximately 17,999 is served by the East St. Louis School District 189 for public education.
