East Syracuse, NY

East Syracuse is an incorporated village in Onondaga County immediately east of Syracuse, set inside the Town of DeWitt. The 2020 census counted 3,078 residents. Before the current name, the settlement was called Messina; the New York Central line and DeWitt rail yards pulled workers and homes into the village's orbit during the late 19th century. An Onondaga village once stood near Kinne Street, with an old trail running down what is now James Street to Ley Creek. The rail history still gives the village a working edge.

Manlius Street, usually called Main Street, carries the center today, lined with locally owned shops, places to eat, bars, manufacturers, and everyday services. I-690 cuts through the south side, while the old canal route survives under Erie Boulevard. East Syracuse-Minoa schools serve most of the village, with a small area in Jamesville-DeWitt. East Syracuse's local scoop is a rail-and-road village where Onondaga trails, a working main street, and a big Syracuse connection all sit within a few blocks.
