East Washington, PA

East Washington is a compact borough wrapped around the edge of Washington, Pennsylvania, with a map that mixes leafy residential streets and institutional corners. Founded in 1892, it is only about 0.45 square miles and is bordered on three sides by Washington while South Strabane Township touches its northern edge. The 2020 census counted 1,858 residents. Part of Washington & Jefferson College lies inside the borough, along with Faith Christian School, Thayer Street Playground, and First Christian Church.

The East Washington Historic District gives the place its strongest visual signature, with Victorian and Revival-era homes built in wood, brick, and stone. Several streets carry the names of local figures, including abolitionist and physician Francis Julius LeMoyne. The borough's small scale makes its relationship with the college and neighboring city hard to miss: a student campus, a playground, old houses, and civic buildings all sit within a few blocks. East Washington feels less like a separate outpost than a preserved residential pocket with its own municipal history and a front-row seat to Washington's daily movement.
