Echo, OR

Echo is a Umatilla County city on the Umatilla River, eight miles south of Hermiston and about 20 miles west of Pendleton. The 2020 census counted 632 residents. The original Oregon Trail passed near the river crossing, and the Columbia Plateau Route came directly through Echo in 1847. J.H. Koontz platted the town in 1880 and named it for his three-year-old daughter; the city incorporated in 1904. Interstate 84 and U.S. 395 pass about a mile north.

Fort Henrietta Park preserves the Lower Crossing area, where emigrants rested, crossed the river, and prepared for the dry miles west. The Oregon Trail Arboretum, the Chinese House Railroad Museum, historic buildings, and downtown Museum of the Streets extend that travel story into present city life. Echo also grew into an agricultural and sheep-shipping center after the railroad arrived in 1883; wheat, alfalfa, corn, seed crops, and cattle now surround the town. Echo is a river crossing that still carries both highway traffic and the memory of westward travel.
