Edcouch, TX

Edcouch is an Hidalgo County city on State Highway 107 and FM 1015, about 18 miles northeast of McAllen. The 2020 census counted 2,732 residents. Edcouch-Elsa ISD organizes the local school day, while city hall, water and wastewater operations, police and fire services, a swimming pool, the Sgt. Juan Rodriguez Community Center, and three municipal parks give the city its own civic backbone. The wider Rio Grande Valley is close enough that work, shopping, and medical trips regularly stretch beyond town.

Edcouch took shape along the railroad in 1927, when landowner and banker Edward Couch laid out the town. Produce packing sheds followed, and citrus, vegetables, and cotton moved through town by rail and highway. The city’s early years brought a post office, newspaper, telephone exchange, and dozens of businesses. Rail service faded in the 1960s, but transportation and water infrastructure still matter to everyday Edcouch. The parks and community center are the places where that older agricultural town meets the present-day city.
