Edgerton, KS

Edgerton is a Johnson County city in the Kansas City metro, with 1,748 residents in the 2020 census. The town began in 1870 when the railroad reached the area, and it was named for an Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway chief engineer. Today, the railroad story has expanded into a major freight operation: BNSF's intermodal facility at Logistics Park Kansas City opened in 2013 as the center of a 3,000-acre industrial complex. The complex sits beside the original town grid. Edgerton's daily map still has small-city pieces.

The original town grid is still legible. Martin Creek Park hosts picnics and ballfields, the Greenspace offers gym activities, and city events include lunch gatherings, pickleball with firefighters, and seasonal community programs. Edgerton Elementary and the Gardner-Edgerton school district connect the town to the surrounding southwest Johnson County suburbs. It is a Kansas City-area place where a 1,700-person town and a large logistics hub operate side by side, with the rail corridor visible from town streets.
