About Edisto
Edisto is an Orangeburg County community along U.S. 601, in the inland South Carolina landscape shaped by the Edisto River watershed. The name points to the Edisto people and to Edisto Township, one of the interior settlements organized along river routes in the 1730s. German and Swiss farmers were among the early settlers drawn to the region, and the agricultural pattern they established still surrounds the community. The place is separate from Edisto Island and Edisto Beach on the coast, despite sharing the same broad name.
Today Edisto is an unincorporated crossroads with homes, churches, farms, local services, and daily trips toward Orangeburg and surrounding towns. U.S. 601 gives it a direct regional line, while back roads connect to fields and smaller settlements. Schools, county services, work, and family routines make up the everyday calendar; the Edisto name carries the deeper river and Native history in the background. Edisto’s scale is rural, but its location keeps it connected to one of South Carolina’s major inland corridors and to the towns that handle larger errands.
