Edmeston, NY

Edmeston is a rural town on Otsego County's western edge, where the Unadilla River forms the boundary and the land rises toward Taylor Hill and Summit Lake. The town contains several hamlets with no single dense center: Edmeston lies in the Wharton Valley, while West Edmeston and South Edmeston sit in the Unadilla Valley. That layout gives the place a layered geography, with creeks, dairy farms, wooded hills, and small community centers spread across the valleys. The town was formed from Burlington in 1808 and took its name from Robert and William Edmeston, brothers whose land grant shaped the northwest corner.

For generations, dairy farming supplied the main economic rhythm. Cheese factories, creameries, mills, blacksmith shops, and small stores grew around that work, and the Edmeston branch of the New York, Ontario & Western Railroad reached the hamlet in 1889. The rail line later disappeared, but the town's roads, volunteer fire and emergency squads, Rotary Club, American Legion, and Edmeston Central School still knit together its scattered communities. Edmeston is the kind of upstate town where the river sets the edge, the valleys hold the hamlets, and local history remains close to the working landscape.
