Egg Harbor, WI

Egg Harbor is a Door County village on the Green Bay side of the peninsula, sitting within the larger Town of Egg Harbor. The town was organized in 1861, when lumbering, cordwood, dairy farming, orchards, and maple syrup shaped the local economy. The village later separated as its own government in 1964, but the town and village still share the harbor, roads, fire service, and Door Peninsula visitor traffic.

The place name comes with its own local argument: stories range from duck eggs on the shore to a legendary hardtack-and-egg fight among boats in 1825. Murphy County Park brings the water side into the present with a beach, pier, boat launch, and Door County Triathlon, while the Niagara Escarpment and Horseshoe Bay Cave add a limestone layer. The town’s farms, orchards, resorts, concerts, and seasonal shops fill in the rest. Egg Harbor’s local scoop is that the name sounds playful, but the town’s working history runs through lumber, dairy, fruit, and water.
