Eglin AFB, FL

Eglin AFB is an Okaloosa County census-designated place built around a sprawling Air Force test and training installation in Florida’s Panhandle. Its ranges cover roughly 724 square miles of land and extend over a large Gulf of Mexico test area, making Eglin feel more like a working region than a conventional town. The War Department received the forest land in 1940, and the Air Corps Proving Ground was activated in 1941 for gunnery training and the testing of aircraft, equipment, and tactics. In 1942, Lieutenant Colonel Jimmy Doolittle’s B-25 crews practiced at Eglin before the raid on Tokyo.

Testing remains the center of Eglin’s local story. The 96th Test Wing runs test and support functions for aircraft, weapons, navigation, guidance, cyber systems, and other military technology, while the base’s range space supports work that needs distance from populated areas. The Eglin Field Historic District preserves twenty World War II-era buildings among more than 3,000 structures on the installation. Base housing, gates, airfields, test schedules, and Gulf range activity set the daily rhythm, while Valparaiso, Niceville, Fort Walton Beach, and Crestview provide the surrounding service map. Eglin is a place where military research, family life, and a very large protected landscape occupy the same address.
