Eielson AFB, AK

About 25 miles southeast of Fairbanks, Eielson Air Force Base occupies the Tanana River floodplain and nearby Yukon-Tanana uplands. Forest, wetlands, lakes, and ponds surround the developed part of the installation, and the base's roads connect its airfield and work areas with housing and support facilities. The base land extends across a broad military landscape, while North Pole, Salcha, and Moose Creek form the nearby communities on the outside edge of the map.

Eielson began as Mile 26 Field in 1943 to support Ladd Army Airfield, reopened in 1946 as the Cold War demanded forward bases closer to the Soviet Union, and grew into a base named for Alaska aviation pioneer Carl Ben Eielson. Runways, hangars, housing, a school, and other buildings expanded as the installation handled fighter, bomber, reconnaissance, air-refueling, and weather missions. Much of the base fabric still reflects that mid-century buildout.

Today the 354th Fighter Wing is the host unit, bringing operations, maintenance, mission support, medical support, and tenant units into one installation. Eielson also supports RED FLAG-Alaska and the Alaska Air National Guard's 168th Wing, so flying, training, and Arctic readiness shape work on the base. Daily life follows that mission: housing, schools, the clinic, recreation, and utilities sit inside the installation, while the central heat and power plant supplies electricity and steam. The same roads lead from family housing to the flight line, maintenance areas, and training units. Air operations are therefore part of the workday and the neighborhood map, with maintenance, security, utilities, and family support all visible in the same installation during every season. Fairbanks, North Pole, Salcha, and Moose Creek supply the regional side of the map. The local scoop is that Eielson is a working installation and residential community on the same map, with the base mission setting the daily rhythm.
