About El Cenizo
El Cenizo is a Webb County city on the Rio Grande about sixteen miles south of Laredo and near the Mexican border town of Nuevo Laredo. It grew from a colonia-style subdivision that lacked paved streets, sewer systems, ambulance service, and other basic infrastructure before incorporation. Residents incorporated El Cenizo in 1989, and the city now operates under a mayor and two at-large commissioners. The border location and the service history belong together: municipal government grew out of the need to build everyday infrastructure close to the river.
Webb County's El Cenizo Community Center on Cecilia Lane provides individual and family services, community programs, and partnerships for residents, while the county's El Cenizo Fitness Center adds weekday gym and Zumba programs. The center served as a county vote center for the May 26, 2026 primary runoff, giving it a civic role alongside its service work. Laredo remains the nearest larger hub for regional services. El Cenizo's local scoop is the layered map: a border city with its own council, a county-supported center, and a history written through water, roads, and municipal basics.
