El Centro Naval Air Facility, CA

El Centro Naval Air Facility is a census-designated place in Imperial County, occupying a military airfield in the heart of Southern California’s Imperial Valley. The setting is flat desert farmland with low winds and long summer heat, conditions the Navy considered useful when selecting the site. The original station used parallel runways on land assembled in 1942; Marine aviation arrived during World War II, and the installation became Marine Corps Air Station El Centro in 1943. After World War II, it was reduced and commissioned as Naval Auxiliary Air Station El Centro in 1946. The concrete aprons and runway system still carry that layered military history.

The facility’s work kept changing with aviation. The Navy’s Parachute Experimental Division moved to El Centro in 1947, and Fleet Gunnery Unit activity followed in 1952; that unit became a predecessor of the Navy’s Top Gun school. The parachute mission ended in 1979, when the site returned to a Naval Air Facility role focused on combat-training and readiness. Today the base supports Navy, Marine Corps, other U.S. services, and allied aviators in flight training and aerial combat exercises. The CDP label describes the installation’s residential population, while the airfield gives El Centro its daily rhythm: aircraft, maintenance crews, training schedules, and Imperial Valley roads meeting at the same desert edge.
