Eleva, WI

Eleva sits in the Town of Albion along the Buffalo River in Trempealeau County, where the river valley lies close to the Chippewa River country. The first settlers in what became Albion arrived in 1856, but the landscape already had its own human geography: Lakota and Ho-Chunk people lived in and exercised sovereignty over the area around present-day Eleva, while Ojibwe territory lay across the Chippewa River to the north. That history matters because the village’s later roads, farms, and rail line followed crossings and corridors that had long connected the countryside.

The Buffalo still gives Eleva its strongest physical reference point. The former 1889 railroad corridor survives as the Buffalo River State Trail, linking local recreation to the old transportation route. Around the village, daily life is tied to farms, school and work trips, seasonal weather, and the services shared across Trempealeau County. Eleva’s small downtown and surrounding farm roads sit close enough to the river for water, flooding, and land use to remain practical concerns, while the trail brings walkers, cyclists, and snowmobilers through the same valley that once carried trains. The result is a community shaped by a river route, a railroad grade, and the layered history of western Wisconsin.
