Elgin, IA

Elgin is a Fayette County city with 685 people at the 2020 census, set where Otter Creek meets the Turkey River. Before the town was established, Sioux and Winnebago people lived in the area. After the 1846 Winnebago Treaty, the U.S. military forcibly removed Winnebago people to Minnesota; white settlers arrived in large numbers in 1848. In 1851, Marcks renamed the town Elgin after his hometown in Illinois. The river confluence and that layered history still give Elgin a specific northeastern Iowa address.

School boundaries now connect Elgin to its neighbors. The former Valley Community School District combined services with North Fayette in 2013 as class sizes and state aid declined; the North Fayette Valley district was formed on July 1, 2018. Elgin holds the middle school, while the high school is in West Union. That arrangement puts the town at the center of a larger rural school map that includes Clermont, Wadena, Fayette, and Hawkeye. The former Valley district brought Elgin, Clermont, and Wadena together, while North Fayette included West Union, Hawkeye, and Fayette. The middle school in Elgin carries the Tigerhawks name.

Elgin's historic center is still used as a local reference point. The Elgin Historical Museum was established in 1990 on Center Street; the 1870s Elgin Block entered the National Register in 2008, and a 1993 museum addition reused bricks and doors from the old Elgin School. The museum's “Voices of the Valley” framing fits the town: water, school consolidation, and older buildings all belong to the same small-city story. The museum's 2026 posted schedule includes Saturday openings from May through October and a second-Thursday opening during part of the year. Its address is 231 Center Street.
