Elgin, OR

Elgin is a Union County city at the junction of Oregon 82 and Oregon 204, with the Wallowa foothills and Grande Ronde Valley shaping the local map. The town's name came from the Lady Elgin, a ship lost on Lake Michigan, an unexpected Great Lakes reference in eastern Oregon. Elgin Opera House, dedicated in 1912, remains the city's signature historic building, and the present-day theater operation uses the old venue for performances and youth programs. Elgin School District 23 serves local students, while Jubilee Lake lies about 19 miles north in the Umatilla National Forest. The city grew from a remote settlement of hunters, trappers, and other early arrivals who once faced a long river journey to reach La Grande. Elgin is a small Oregon town with a theater, school, forest lake, and a name borrowed from a shipwreck.
