Elizabeth, IL

Elizabeth is a Jo Daviess County village in the rolling hill country of northwest Illinois. The 2020 census counted 694 residents. U.S. 20 runs through the village, with Apple River country and farm roads spreading around the center. Elizabeth's map is small, but it holds several layers: lead mining, an early settlement, a railroad stop, a Main Street business district, and the reconstructed Apple River Fort just off the highway.

During the Black Hawk War, Apple River Fort came under attack on June 24, 1832, in the last Native American offensive east of the Mississippi. The settlement later took the name Elizabeth, associated with the women who helped defend the fort. The village incorporated in 1868, and the Chicago Great Western Railroad arrived in 1887. Today the Apple River Fort State Historic Site, its Interpretive Center, the Chicago Great Western Railway Depot Museum, the Elizabeth History Museum, and River Ridge Community Unit School District 210 give the village a strong civic and historical lineup. Elizabeth is a place where the road, the fort, and the railroad all tell parts of the same story.
