About Elk River
Elk River's outdoor recreation system extends well beyond neighborhood playfields. The city maintains 41 parks and one conservation area across 1,388 acres, with a mountain-bike park, cross-country ski trails, a biathlon course, athletic complexes, playgrounds, and sports courts. The Furniture and Things Community Event Center makes ice and field sports possible year-round through two NHL-size rinks, a 30,000-square-foot turf and training space, three batting and pitching cages, and two free indoor walking tracks. The same building contains meeting and party rooms, a cafe kitchen, and a weekday Senior Activity Center with fitness classes, cards, billiards, art, book club, and other scheduled programs. Across from City Hall, Elk River Public Library gives patrons access to nearly one million items shared among 32 Great River Regional Library branches. Its local spaces include children's and teen areas, free internet, a multipurpose room, and study rooms.
During 2020-2024, 24.8 percent of residents were under age 18 and 13.7 percent were age 65 or older. Homeowners occupied 79.2 percent of homes, and 87.8 percent of people age one or older had remained in the same home from the previous year. Median owner-occupied value was $370,100, median monthly owner costs with a mortgage were $2,075, and median gross rent was $1,283. Median household income was $108,741, 33.8 percent of adults held at least a bachelor's degree, and workers' mean travel time was 27.4 minutes. The park system, all-season event center, regional library access, and designated senior space distribute public activity across seasons and age groups; the 2025 estimate stood more than 2,000 above the 2020 count.
