Elkader, IA

Elkader is Clayton County’s seat on the Turkey River, a northeast Iowa city whose best-known landmarks sit right where the river meets town. The city’s name honors Emir Abdelkader, the Algerian leader who resisted the French conquest; founders Timothy Davis, John Thompson, and Chester Sage chose it when they platted the community in 1846.

The railroad arrived in 1886, and the stone Keystone Bridge followed in 1888. That bridge is still the local visual shorthand, stretching across the Turkey River as one of the longest stone arch bridges of its type west of the Mississippi. The Elkader Opera House adds a second layer: Turner Hall stood on the site before the Victorian-era opera house became a meeting, performance, and civic space. Central Community School District serves the city, while the old hotel-turned-Turkey River Mall gives downtown an unusual second life. Put Elkader on the map as a river county seat with a bridge, an opera house, and a name borrowed from North African history.
