About Elkhart

Elkhart is a Polk County city with two town sites in its backstory. The first Elkhart was laid out in 1853 by settlers from Elkhart, Indiana, but it lost population; the post office moved to nearby Ottawa, and the town’s buildings followed. In 1901 the railroad platted a new Elkhart at the present location. North Polk schools serve the community today. Elkhart is central Iowa with a name that had to move before it could stick: old site, new tracks, same town.
