About Elkton
Elkton is a Brookings County city just east of Brookings and close enough to Minnesota that some residents use Minnesota addresses. The town was platted in 1880 and takes its name from Elkton, Maryland. Its civic map is compact: City Hall on Elk Street, the school and community library, a museum, park and playgrounds, and locally owned shops and services all serve the surrounding farm country. Volunteer fire and ambulance services and contract law enforcement round out the city’s practical infrastructure.
School is the biggest shared institution. Elkton School District 05-3 runs pre-K through 12 at 508 Buffalo Street, and the city shares library facilities with the district. The school calls its teams the Elks, tying the city name into everyday identity. A place this close to the state line carries two geographies at once: Brookings County, South Dakota for local government, and Minnesota just across the border in residents’ addresses. The local scoop is a small city with one school, one library partnership, and a state line in the background.
