About Ellaville

Ellaville is Schley County’s seat and only incorporated place, with a townsite that began as Pond Town around 1812 along a stagecoach route. When Schley County was created in 1857, Robert Burton sold 150 acres for the county seat, and the new town was laid out in 1858. Ellaville was named for Burton’s daughter Ella; the courthouse still sits at the center of the story, with the current Romanesque Revival building dating to 1899. The railroad reached town in 1884, adding another route to the county seat’s story. Ellaville is a Georgia courthouse town where stage roads, county government, and the Burton family name all meet.
