Ellendale, MN

Ellendale is a Steele County city that began when the Burlington, Cedar Rapids & Northern Railroad arrived in 1900 on its way between Albert Lea and Minneapolis. Townsite officials named it for Ellen Dale Ives, the railroad president’s wife, and the new community quickly gained a depot, bank, post office, mercantile, livery stables, meat market, elevators, and lumberyard. The village incorporated in 1901, when about 200 people lived there; by 1910, the population had reached 400. The 2020 census counted 676.

Minnesota Highway 30 and I-35 now carry the traffic that once moved through the depot, putting Ellendale between Owatonna and Albert Lea with a wider southern Minnesota reach. The old railroad logic still shows in the town’s layout and in the way farm products and services gather around a small center. Ellendale-Geneva schools later joined New Richland-Hartland to form NRHEG District 2168, connecting the city to several surrounding communities. Today Ellendale is a compact agricultural town with a railroad beginning, a post office tradition, and highways that keep the old midpoint location useful.
