Ellison Bay, WI

Tucked near the northern tip of the Door County peninsula along Highway 42, Ellison Bay offers a quieter, more relaxed pace than the busier harbor towns further south. Home to around two hundred year-round residents, this small waterside community in the Town of Liberty Grove has roots stretching back to the 1870s, when Danish immigrant John Eliasen first settled the area. Over the generations, the local way of life shifted from commercial fishing and cherry orchards into a welcoming haven for artists, craftspeople, and outdoor enthusiasts drawn to the wooded shoreline.

Daily life here revolves around the dramatic natural scenery of bluffs, quiet back roads, and open water. Just west of the village center, Ellison Bluff County Park features an observation deck perched high above Green Bay with expansive sunset views over the water and nearby islands. The community is also home to The Clearing, a historic folk school founded by landscape architect Jens Jensen that hosts hands-on classes in arts, humanities, and nature study. Families are served by the Gibraltar Area School District, and residents enjoy a close-knit feel with local bakeries, pottery studios, and quiet beaches right down the road.
