Ellsinore, MO

Ellsinore is a Carter County city on Missouri Route V, about a mile north of U.S. 60 and roughly 14 miles east-southeast of Van Buren. Its setting inside the Mark Twain National Forest makes the town a gateway to the Ozark landscape, with wooded ridges and long rural roads replacing the dense urban fabric found farther west. The city’s main routes keep it connected while the forest gives the surrounding area its scale.

The town site was patented to Robert Patterson in 1857, two years before Carter County was organized. Today, East Carter County R-II School District provides the local school system, and the Carter County Library maintains a branch in town. Those institutions give Ellsinore a civic center of gravity that is easy to miss in a place best understood through its road, forest, and county context. Ellsinore is a small Missouri city with an Ozark address, a school community, and a history that began before the county around it had taken shape.
