Elma, IA

Tucked into the rolling farmland of Howard County in northeast Iowa, Elma is a quiet, close-knit community of around 650 people. The town owes its beginnings to a late-nineteenth-century detour. Back in 1886, when the railroad bypassed a nearby settlement called Busti, local residents packed up their homes and businesses to settle around the new depot instead. Named after a railroad man's young daughter, the town quickly took root and has kept that down-to-earth, neighborly spirit ever since.

Today, Elma offers a relaxed pace of life with plenty of classic small-town charm. Residents enjoy a peaceful, affordable place to live, surrounded by scenic rural roads and wide-open green spaces. Students attend schools in the neighboring Howard-Winneshiek district, while nearby hubs like Cresco and New Hampton provide easy access to larger stores, healthcare, and dining. It is a comfortable, welcoming corner of Iowa where neighbors still look out for one another.
